San Leandro, Calif. — A San Leandro neighborhood is grappling with the aftermath of a fatal early-morning shooting involving deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office that left a 41-year-old man dead.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Anthony Ant. Deputies responded shortly before 3:20 a.m. Monday to a residence on Selborne Drive in the Fairmont Terrace neighborhood after receiving a call from a man who reportedly stated he had a firearm, expressed intent to harm others, and requested to speak with law enforcement.
According to sheriff’s officials, when deputies arrived, the man exited the home. During the encounter, authorities said he “presented an imminent threat,” prompting two deputies to discharge their firearms. Ant was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies involved were not injured.
Under California Assembly Bill 1506, which requires independent investigation of officer-involved shootings resulting in death, the California Department of Justice has taken over the case. The office of Attorney General Rob Bonta confirmed it is conducting the investigation.
In a statement, the Department of Justice indicated that preliminary information suggests the individual who was shot was not armed at the time of the encounter. Sheriff’s officials have not provided additional details about what actions constituted the alleged imminent threat.
The incident has left residents in the quiet residential neighborhood shaken. Neighbor Adelfa Hegarty said she heard unusual activity early that morning and was surprised to see the area still cordoned off hours later. “I was really surprised to see everything taped off, and saddened as well,” she said.
Authorities have not released further details as the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are asking the public for patience while investigators review body-worn camera footage, physical evidence, and witness statements.
As the independent review proceeds, community members continue to reflect on the loss. Family and friends are mourning Ant’s death, while broader questions surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remain under examination.
The California Department of Justice is expected to release additional information once its investigation advances.
